A downloadable game for Windows and macOS

This is my recreation of the classic 1979 arcade game: Asteroids.

There are 12 levels. Whereas the original gets harder by adding one more large asteroid per level and making the small flying saucer appear more often, I've taken a more curated approach which should be more nuanced. Let me know if it's too easy, too hard and whether it progresses at the right pace from level to level.

It's over to you and I'd really appreciate your feedback. How does it feel to play? Do the controls respond the way you'd expect? Does it look right? Does it sound right? I welcome straight-talking feedback as it will help me the most. And if you like it please make a noise on social media!

I'll be back with a new game before long, so follow me here and/or on Twitter and on YouTube.

Asteroids is one of the first games I played in the arcades when I was a teen. I would have been 10 when it first appeared. I know 8-bit pixel art is all the rage, but I love the smooth vector graphics of this game and I've tried to recreate that feel here.

I've been faithful to the original but not rigidly so. It should look, feel and sound like the original, but I've asked questions like "Why should an asteroid only split in two?" or "Why should there only be one flying saucer on the screen at a time?" — you'll have to get to the higher levels to start seeing these changes.

Why have I created Asteroids Revisited and released it as a free game? This is my first videogame, created in Unity which I learned last year. I have an original game in mind but I kept getting the advice that it's good to start with some mini-projects that have a small scope and see them through from concept to release, and in the end I listened.

Install instructions

Add this game to your collection, then head over to the itch app and install it from there. (That way you'll avoid warnings, as I have not code-signed the application for MacOS or Windows 10.)

As mentioned in the description, I'd love to get your feedback. And if you like it please make a noise on social media! Let me know what level you get to.

The last time I played this I was 14 and it was on the ZX Spectrum.  This version however has the look and feel of the arcade game and captures it remarkably well.  Motion is super smooth and the sound is perfect especially on a large speaker.  I’m not a natural gamer and therefore cannot get past level 5.  So there’s the challenge.  A great game for distraction therapy and you don’t need any coins to re-start.

never played the original game myself, but playing this game was great in itself. It runs smoothly and has sound effects and cool looking explosions that make it even better. Definitely would recommend!😄

A polished, and faithful-in-all-the-right-ways recreation of Asteroids. The movement of the ship and the graphics feel and look just like the original. Only graphical difference from the original arcade cabinet is missing the glowing monitor effect. I like the added variability in this version, such as asteroids breaking unpredictably into multiple pieces.

If you want a taste of sweet nostalgia from the 1979 seminal title, or to see an example of the perfect kind of starting project that a burgeoning game developer can attempt, I recommend playing Asteroids Revisited!
